Civic, the blockchain-based identity app, has partnered with Anheuser-Busch InBev to dispense beer from a blockchain-enabled vending machine in America. Using an app, they can verify the purchaser is over the 21-year-old legal drinking age. The vending machine was piloted at the Consensus 2018 conference in New York in partnership with the world’s largest brewer.

Prospective customers scan a QR code with the Civic app which verifies that they are over the legal drinking age, and the machine dispenses a 12oz can of Budweiser. Hope to dupe this machine by faking your age? Sorry sir! Civic’s own systems have already verified its users' personal details, including age.

“This is the first proper use case for identity on the blockchain,” Civic founder and CEO Vinny Lingham told Forbes in Johannesburg. “This is a very basic use case, but you can buy a can of beer.”
